Within the West Province is a natural preserve call Gishwati. It is home to many dairy cows, milk and cheese production. So travelling from Gisenyi we left the main paved road in village and headed into surrounding mountains.
What a trip...about 3 hours up a unique scenic mountain trail. Unique in that when we Canadians think of scenic it's usually trees, rocks, lakes and rivers. As you'll see from the following pictures it's more like unique agricultural practises and challenges.
As we travelled we see people working their garden plots and others digging gravel and rocks from mountain creeks, hauling it onto the roadside to be sorted, piled and eventually loaded onto trucks for delivery to, I guess, wherever needed. But all processes are hand labour and no doubt for wages in the range of $3 cdn per day.
The blueish trees you see, I'm told are eucalytus trees...didn't see any koala bears but lots of these trees.
After this trip I vowed never to complain about Canadian roads again. I don't
believe there is a even a forest road more rugged than this one in Canada.
