Gishwati, cont'd #3
We arrived at the milk collection centre on the lower road. My companion and guide jumped out of the vehicle and immediately climbed a muddy path up to the building. I thought I should follow but after a mere couple of metres it was obvious there had to be a better way and he called to the driver to take me by car up this upper road...what a relief! I don't think I could have made up the muddy trail...it was just too steep.
There are currently 6 collection centres in this area with a another 8 anticipated for construction in the near future, each receiving 1-3 thousand litres per day. It gives an appreciation for the amount of milk production from this area.
The grass growth is quite impressive although there are some indications of overgrazing. Given the climate and the potential to grow some legumes intermingled with the grass, I suggested that Birdsfoot Trefoil might be possibility. It could also be a potential booster of nitrogen for grass growth. Does anyone have any thoughts on that suggestion?
